Configuring Windows 95/98/ME PPP Connection

Installing Dial-Up Networking:
  • Click on Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.
  • Double click on Add/Remove Programs.
  • Select Windows Setup tab and double click on Communications.
  • Select Dial-Up Networking option by placing a check mark in the square box right next to it.
  • Click on OK.
  • You might need to insert your Windows 95/98/ME CD.
Installing Dial-Up Adapter and Configure TCP/IP:
  • Click on Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.
  • Double click on Network icon.
  • Click on Add.
  • Double click on Client.
  • Select Microsoft from the manufacturers list and Client For Microsoft Networks from network clients list.
  • Click on Add button again.
  • Double click on Adapter.
  • Select Microsoft from the manufacturers list and Dial-Up Adapter from the network adapter list.
  • Click on Add button again.
  • Double click on Protocol.
  • Select Microsoft from manufacturers list and TCP/IP from the network protocols list.
  • Double click on TCP/IP (or TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter).
  • The IP Address tab should have "Obtain an IP address automatically" turned on.
  • Click on OK. You might need to insert your Windows 98 CD.
  • You will be asked to reboot your computer at this point.
Make a new connection:
  • Click on Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Communications -> Dial-up Networking.
  • If this is the first time installation you'll be presented with a connection setup wizard. Click on Next to continue. Enter GDEX for the name of the computer you're dialing. Then enter the appropriate dial-up number assigned to you.
  • If this is not the first time installation, then click on Make New Connection icon. Enter GDEX for the name and click on Next. Enter the appropriate dial-up number assigned to you. Click on Next and then Finish.
  • At this point you should see a GDEX icon within your dial-up networking folder.
  • Highlight it (click on it one time) if it is not already highlighted.
  • Click on the file menu and select Properties.
  • Leave everything by its default setting. Click on Server Types.
  • Remove the checks next to "Log on to Network", "NetBEUI", and "IPX/SPX Compatible".
  • Click on OK to close the properties sheet.
Connecting to the Internet:

At this point you should have everything configured and ready to connect.
  • From the Dial-Up Networking Folder double click on the GDEX icon. You'll be prompted to enter your User ID and password for the first time. You may check the "save password" option. Make sure that the phone number is correct for you POP.
  • Your User ID must be in the form: "username@gdex.net".
  • Your screen should appear as below:


  • Click on the Connect button.
  • The wizard will attempt to use your modem to connect to GDEX. Your modem must be unused by other applications. Close all application that use the modem before trying to connect.
  • After a successful connection you're ready to go; you can start your web browser and surf.
